I am thrilled to introduce you to our wonderful new sponsor on Blog For Bride, Dirty Fabulous. I had the pleasure of visiting the Dirty Fabulous Boutique in Dublin and was seriously impressed by their stunning collection of vintage dresses and accessories. I was like a child in a sweet shop, ooohing and aaahing at the beautiful designs, the fabrics, the style, swoon…
Can you tell us a little about yourself, what you offer and where you’re based?
We are a vintage boutique specialising in occasion wear from the 1930’s to the 60’s.
Dirty Fabulous stocks devine bias cut gowns from the 1930’s and 40’s, gorgeous prom dresses and va va voom wiggle dresses from the 1950’s. Silk suits and mod mini’s from the 60’s and flirty and fun party dresses from the1970’s and beyond. We carry only the best in American vintage pieces. Our dresses and accessories are prefect for the bride to be, mother of the bride, bridesmaid and wedding guests. Dirty Fabulous is based on the first floor of 21 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2, Ireland.
When should brides start looking and shopping for their bridal dress if they are planning on a vintage wedding dress?
There is no set time needed for buying a vintage wedding dress. Unlike bridal boutiques you will not have to order your dress within a specific time. The time-line will be dictated by whatever the bride is comfortable with. She could pop into us a month before the wedding and find her perfect dress or make an appointment a year before and we could source something specific for her if we don’t currently have in what she has in mind.
Can you arrange a private appointment for bridal parties to visit you and try your dresses?
Our hours are split into appointments in the morning until 3pm and then after 3pm anyone can buzz the bell and walk in. The appointments offer the bride more time and personal service. Definitely important when looking a vintage wedding dress as they are so different from modern dresses!
Do you have any advice for brides choosing a bridal dress for a warmer climate?
The dress has to be made of a breathable fabric for warmer climates. You really don’t want perspiration marks on your slinky satin dress on your big day. Make sure your dress isn’t too constricting as you’ll feel too uncomfortable when it’s very hot. The shorter 1950s prom dresses and 1960s tunic style gowns are really ideal for warm weather weddings.
Do you have any advice for brides choosing a bridal dress for a colder climate?
Many vintage wedding dresses from the 1930s and 40’s have sleeves, they are quite covered but beautifully tailored, these styles are amazing for colder climate weddings. We also carry many two-piece bridal suits from the 1950’s to the 60s. They often have very fitted dresses, swing coats and lots of beading and embellishment. Teamed with a cage veil they make a stunning wedding outfit, without having to freeze on your big day!
Can you suggest some nice ideas for brides getting married in a church where they are required to cover their shoulders?
We often have brides who need an elegant piece to cover their shoulders in a church wedding. The vintage options are limitless, ostrich feather shrugs, cream fur caplets, beaded cardigans and silk shawls will all add to a beautiful look on your wedding day.
You also stock accessories do you have any advice for brides choosing accessories to compliment their vintage wedding dress?
When wearing a vintage dress we find at Dirty Fabulous that the bride can have a lot more fun with her accessories. Every era has such a totally different look and you can either wear something in keeping with the period or you can tie in some modern elements such as a pair of killer patent vibrant heels. We will always offer lots of styling advise to our brides on their options. This could range from where to place the perfect rhinestone brooch, which tone of pearls to wear or whether chandelier earrings would suit the neckline. We also make bespoke headpieces to suit their individual dresses. These can vary from crystal combs, veils and Avant Garde structural headpieces.
Do you also dress the bridal party, bridesmaids, mother of the bride etc?
We’ve often dressed whole bridal parties who love the idea of keeping a vintage look within the wedding group. One of things our customers love is that they can be completely sure that when they are wearing a Dirty Fabulous vintage dress that no one will be wearing the same dress as them. In fact no one will have even seen a dress like it! This is a really important factor for the mother of the bride and bridesmaids. As there are so many endless styles in vintage eras you can really find a dress that reflects your own personality, shape and style without having to follow a particular current fashion trend that may not be flattering to you. The vintage world is your oyster!
